The medal was established in memory of the battles of the Main Army of the Grand Duke Nikolai Friedrich Peter on September 22, 1866. This medal was awarded to all officers, soldiers and officials who participated in the Oldenburg military corps against the South German states and distinguished themselves by a kind attitude towards the enemy and good leadership under any circumstances. Oldenburg were part of the so-called Main Army. The stamp carver was Rudolf Kölbel, a court medalist and engraver from Oldenburg. The medal was made by the L. Ostermann Berlin Mint, formerly G. Loo. A total of 3,687 medals were made, of which, however, only 3,685 were awarded. Until 1899, medals were issued to replace lost pieces. Medals with a small -D - as a manufacturer or without a manufacturer are overprints.
