Marriage Jubilee Medal for 1888 Golden Wedding
1888 Golden Wedding Jubilee Medal
- Material: Silver
- Size: 45mm
- Weight: about 50.7g
After taking office as king and emperor in 1888, William II, in the tradition of the gold wedding medal donated by William I, established new medals depicting the new imperial couple. This medal was awarded to couples who had been married for 50 years. An error occurred when making stamps for the medal. The first medals inadvertently bore the name - AUGUSTA - VICTORIA - on the obverse. William II's wife. His name was Auguste. The first name was probably taken from the medal of William I. The wife of the latter was called Augustus. By the time the error was discovered, 1,300 medals had already been minted and awarded. Then in 1890 a new stamp was carved with the correct name - AUGUSTE - VICTORIA. In total, from 1888 to 1918, the medal was awarded about 44 thousand times. This medal was presented in a case with a corresponding congratulatory letter. Studies with the royal crown and imperial crown were issued. Studies with the imperial crown are very rare compared to the royal crown. The flag bearer for this medal was Emil Weigand.
Round silver medal with rim.
