The medal was instituted on 11 June 1879 by King William I and his wife Augusta in connection with the golden wedding. Until that time, religious scriptures were awarded on the anniversary of the marriage.
This medal has been awarded since 1881 to couples who have been married for 50 years. This medal was presented in a case with a corresponding congratulatory letter. The red-brown case had gold on the lid, intertwined with each other, decorated with the letters - A - W -. Gold royal crown for Prussian married couples. Married couples from Alsace-Lorraine could also receive a medal. Unlike Prussian couples, the corps had an imperial crown above the letter code. These studies are very rare. It is believed that only 3% of studies with the imperial crown. The standard bearer of this medal was Friedrich Wilhelm Kulrich. A total of 3,602 medals were minted. After the death of William I, 139 of them were melted down. His grandson William II. continued the tradition by handing out medals with his portrait and wife.
