Awards of Germany - National Socialism "Gdansk - Free City
Danzig first became a free state after the Peace of Tilsit in 1807. From 1814 to 1919, Danzig was the capital of the province of West Prussia. After World War I, Danzig was separated from Germany by Article 100-108 of the Treaty of Versailles and became a free city that was protected by the League of Nations. The share of the Polish population at that time was about 4%. These included the urban districts of Danzig and Sopot, the districts of Danziger-Höhe, Danziger-Niederung and Big Werder. Agreements with Poland regulated political and economic relations. Despite this, many disputes arose between the cut-off Gdansk and Poland.
In 1933, the NSDAP also became the strongest force in the People's Day in Gdańsk. H. Rauschning became the new president. Especially economically, Poland used Danzig's position and sought to gain more and more sovereign rights in Danzig. C.J. Burkhard of the League of Nations was appointed as mediator in 1937. The question of Danzig also became an occasion for World War II. On September 1, Danzig was incorporated into the German Empire and became the capital of the imperial palace of Danzig-West Prussia. Most of the orders and badges of honor of the Free City of Danzig date back to the period after the National Socialists came to power in 1933-1940.
