The Merit Cross of the former 28th Göben Infantry Regiment presented here was donated after 1926 by the General Association. The exact date of foundation or year has not yet been established. In 1926, local clubs of former servicemen of the Goeben infantry regiment already existed. The first attempt to create it dates back to 1921. Boehmer's reserve lieutenant organized Goeben's memorial day on September 23-25 in Linz am Rhein. After that, the Union was created, which was soon banned by the occupation authorities. Only in 1926, probably, together with the Officers' Union on the 1st day of Pentecost in 1926, the General Union was re-created. By this time, there were 17 local associations with 1382 members. The fund was to be created later. The president was the former regiment commander, Lieutenant General a. D. Hans von Oidtman. Documents known to date are dated 1929. Further awards were published in the Polki-Novosti club body. Honored members, patrons, and members of the Goeben family were awarded. For example, Ms. Lilly von Goeben in Stockholm in 1931. Published in 1931, a total of 34 media. The only manufacturer of the cross was Hoffstetter in Bonn. Due to the very short rental period, these crosses are very rare. By the law of May 15, 1934, the award was discontinued.
The cross is made of gilded copper alloy with an applied enameled medallion on the front side. Between the cruciform sleeves at a distance from the medallion is a circular wreath of oak leaves. Cruciform shoulders with an internal elevated, smooth, wide border. The inner sides are finely granular. Rear side with vertical needle system with mating hooks. On the lower cruciform shoulder of manufacturers.
