The state ministry of the newly formed Free State of Thuringia established the rescue medal presented here on 9 March 1926. The medal was to be awarded in cases where the act of salvation is associated with a particularly significant danger to the life of the rescuer and is associated with a special proof of determination and self-sacrifice. The awarding period was very short, since in 1934 state awards of individual states were prohibited by the equality of the National Socialists.
