This military memorial cross was established on September 13, 1921 by Admiral Ludwig von Schroeder together with a comrade in the marine corps. She was supposed to serve the fighters of the corps as a recognition of tact and fidelity to duty, fallen comrades in honorable memory and a reminder to the German people. The right to receive was, according to a preliminary examination, former members of the corps, who also had civil honorary rights, that is, they were not guilty. The cross was awarded a diploma depicting a typical Flemish tower with sunlight behind it. The Cross of Flanders was to be paid for by the carrier itself. Combat staples could additionally be applied to the tape. The following battles are known: the Battle of Flanders (also from 1917), Somme, Isère, Ypres, Breakthrough Battle, Antwerp, Naval War and Air War. This money also had to be paid for by itself.
In World War I, a separate naval corps was formed, which was responsible mainly in Flanders for the coast guard and for operations of the naval and air forces in the English Channel up to the Irish Sea. Hence the name of the cross. The corps had various naval forces, submarines, aviation troops and artillery formations. The detachment consisted mainly of sailors. Divisions were replenished, including Landwehr units, field artillery, sappers and hussars. Since this naval corps was not very large, it last (in 1917) consisted of 3 divisions, these crosses are relatively rare. The commander was Admiral Ludwig von Schroeder.
About 30 thousand crosses were awarded.
