Freikorps Epp was created in 1919 by Franz Ritter von Epp as a border guard unit of the East in Thuringian Ordruf. The volunteer corps numbered about 700 people. For the first time, the corps was used in the defeat of the Munich Soviet Republic. After that, the Freikor Epp corps was admitted to the Reichswehr and for the most part constituted the rifle brigade 21. In 1920, the unit also participated in the Kappovsky putsch in Munich. Afterwards, Epp and his 21st Rifle Brigade were sent to the Ruhr area to suppress the Ruhr Army.
In 1921, Epp became commander of the 7th (Bavarian) division, through his chief captain Ryom became a confidant of Adolf Hitler. Notable members of Epp's freikor included Rudolf Hess and brothers Gregor and Otto Strasser. The badge design is by Schwegerle.
Freikorpus had its own sleeve insignia or collar mirrors as a sign of its affiliation. Whether it was possible to continue wearing these signs in the Reichswehr, I have not yet been able to establish.
