The Fire Service Cross of Honor was established on November 28, 1928 by the land association of voluntary fire brigades of Hesse. The state government gave permission for this. This cross was awarded until the establishment of the Reich Fire Department Badge of Honor on January 30, 1938. The cross was awarded to persons for special merit in extinguishing a fire on a blue ribbon and firefighters on a red ribbon for merit or for the first 50 years of faithful service in the fire department. Firefighters received the cross after 40 years of service. In 1932, the service life was reduced to 45 years, and in 1936 again to 35 years. Silver coins have a denomination of 900 or 990.
