The order was established on December 21, 1933 by the Minister of the Interior of Prussia Wilhelm Frick, who was also the Minister of the Interior of the Reich. In 1934, a new fire extinguishing law came into force. It, among other things, redesigned the structure of the union, and as a result, the badge of honor awarded since 1926 was replaced by a new one. Eligibility was granted to firefighters from a recognized fire service who had served conscientiously for at least 25 years or had earned merit for themselves through special life-risk work. Heads of fire departments had the opportunity to receive a badge before the expiration of 25 years. Persons entering the administrative apparatus could also be hired if their activities were related to the development of the fire department.
The award was made on the Prussian state coin according to the Roth stamp.
