This medal was established on May 1 by the Führer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler in recognition of the merits of the "reunification of Austria" with the German Empire on March 13, 1938. After the resignation of Austrian Chancellor Schuschnig on March 11, 1938, and under pressure from Goering, the still current Minister of the Interior, Zeiss-Inquart, demanded the entry of German troops "to prevent a civil war." On March 12, 1938, the 8th Army launched an invasion of Austria. On March 13, 1938, the Austrian federal government adopted a federal constitutional law on reunification with the German Empire. It was subsequently passed as imperial law. The medal was awarded to persons who achieved the reunification of Austria and the German Empire. These included Austrians who received German citizenship after unification, relatives of dead fighters during reunification, and persons who lost Austrian citizenship due to their national socialist beliefs or were forced to leave Austria. German persons included Wehrmacht servicemen, police officers, members of the SS, SA, NSKK and NSFK, if they were in Austria before April 10, 1938, as well as relatives of those killed in battle. The first projects of the medal were rejected. She was awarded the medal depicted here.
Medals are made of matte silver bronze or of oxidized military metal. The author of the project is Professor Richard Klein from Munich.
