The Hitler Youth sniper sign was established in 1938 by the Reichsügendführer Baldur von Schirach. It was mainly intended to recognize special shooting performances by HJ leaders and DJs. A prerequisite was the already received Hitler Youth award for shooting for shooters. In general, all HJ members could also receive a sniper badge if they had a shooter badge. Acquisition requirements were increased from 5 to 10 shots. A rate-of-fire exercise and a live-fire drill were also added. All results were recorded in the rifle book. In the middle of World War II, starting in 1942, the sign was also produced in zinc. Notable manufacturers were Wilhelm Deumer Lüdenscheid, Steinhauer & Luck Lüdenscheid, Matthias Oechsle & Sohn Ansbach and Frank & Reif of Stuttgart. The number of awarded until the end of 1943 amounted to 31,904 people. This means that only one in every 8.5 Shooting Award winners also completed or completed a sniper badge. As the highest honor in shooting, the HJ Shooting Award was created in 1941 for master shooters. Source: J. Nimmergut, Deutsche Orden und Ehrenzeichen before 1945, vol. IV, 2001.
