The Cross of Merit for Voluntary Care was established on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of March 5, 1901 by Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria. Persons were awarded for many years and special merits in voluntary care and for assistance to the military sanitary service. The award consisted of a peace class and a military decoration indicated by a silver ribbon with the year on the ribbon. Sleepers exist with 1870/71 and 1914 numbers. The screed with the number 1914 was granted only after July 8, 1915. The Merit Cross could be worn next to each other as a reward for peace and war. So is the reward for voluntary care. The Merit Cross was subject to return upon death. For repeated special distinctions in the war, a silver crown could be awarded to the cross of merit. Source: J.
