The award was established on 5 March 1901 by Prince Regent Luitpold. The occasion was the 80th anniversary of the Prince Regent. This award should be noted for the high importance and support of the military sanitary service in war and selfless activities in peacetime. The awards were presented to members of the Land Aid Society and the Bavarian Red Cross sorority for their well-deserved 20 years of work in the field. Members of the Order of the Knights of St George, the Order of St John and members of affiliated corporations, institutions and unions of these knights were also eligible. A prerequisite was the support of the military sanitary service. For members of volunteer sanitary convoys, after at least 1 year in the convoy, the period of military service was counted. The Bavarian Red Cross Land Association later donated a silver laurel wreath for 30 years of service, which was fixed on a ribbon.
