The Cross of Merit to the Oldenburg Union of Warriors was established by the Grand Duke Frederick Augustus as patron on August 16, 1902. It was the anniversary of the Battle of Vionville-Mars-la-Toure in the War of 1870-71, awarding individuals who distinguished themselves with distinguished service to the Oldenburg Warrior Alliance. The military chancellery, on behalf of the Grand Duke, performed awards at the suggestion of the chairman of the Oldenburg Land Union of Warriors.
Simultaneously with the Cross of Merit, the Cross of Merit for the flags of warrior unions was established. Clubs that carried their flag with the authority of the Grand Duke were eligible, in recognition of a long-standing superior patriotic position. By the time the Kiefhauser Union joined the Oldenburg Land Union of Warriors, there were 183 clubs with 17,603 members. The badge of honor has been awarded less than 200 times and, accordingly, is rare and expensive.
