This medal was instituted on 15 December 1889 by Prince Regent Luitpold. The occasion was the 50th anniversary of the admission of the Prince Regent to the Knights Military House of the Order of St. George on December 8, 1839. The medal was awarded exclusively to members of the order who attended the anniversary celebration. The medal was not refundable and remained in his family after the death of the awarded. An illustration of the value of this commemorative medal is the method of wearing. The statutes prescribed that medal 1 be before all other orders and honorary badges of Bavaria. Place to wear the order buckle. The medal was awarded only 75 times. The obverse is by Anton Scharff, the reverse is by Alois Bursch. Upon request, the knights of the order could receive a second copy. They were made of silver. The main monetary department of Munich presented 11 minted silver-gilded medals.
