The medal was established on February 27, 1889 by the royal regent Luitpold. The awards are to be given to German citizens and foreigners who have saved lives through courageous and selfless actions. The Rescue Medal was also repeatedly awarded. The award was announced in the official journal of the royal Ministry of the Interior. It mentioned the act of salvation and servitude. The medalist was Professor Anton Scharf, K.U.K. Medallier and director of the Engraving Academy in Vienna. After the death of the owner, the medals were to be returned. 2 options were presented. The first with the manufacturer's designation in the cantilever part of the front had a thicker eye. In addition to the differences in coinage and font, the second option has a regular, small wire eye. The medals were only 39 mm and slightly lighter. Awards up to 1908 are in 185 copies.
