This award was established on August 10, 1907 by Grand Duke Frederick Augustus II. Persons who received special merits in voluntary nursing in wartime or peacetime or in other charitable activities were awarded. Borrowed men and women. For women, this award was presented on the women's loop. On June 9, 1908, the circle of recipients was expanded. Now members of clubs and public organizations could be awarded and persons holding senior positions in medical and non-profit institutions, as well as outstanding patrons. For senior officials, a 25-year term of service usually applies, and non-senior officials should only be eligible for the award after 35 years of service. The exception was people over 70 years old. According to the charter, the medal was to be made of bronze with gilding. The manufacturer is the court gold miner Knauer from Oldenburg. This secured the first 50 medals gilded in bronze. Then the 2nd production series was made of silver with gilding. The number 18 assigned to Friedhelm Bayreiss was adjusted through extensive studies and corresponding extrapolations to 450 units.
