This badge of honor was established on April 25, 1912 by the Duke Johann Albrecht von Mecklenburg as regent of the Duchy of Braunschweig. Persons who served conscientiously for at least 40 years in a volunteer fire department or served with special distinction in a fire service unit on duty or partially in a professional fire department and a volunteer fire department were awarded. Outstanding services in extinguishing fires in the country or municipality were also noted.
There are 2 options for the medal. The first option has on the edge next to the ear a factory punch - HJ - for Hermann Jurgens, a court jeweler in Braunschweig and a silver punch - 950 -. The second, shown here, is a non-manufacturer option and has a silver stamp - 990 - under the reverse star. The assignment of the front and back sides in different sources is indicated differently. For 50 years of service in the fire department, ribbons were awarded to the medal. The award has not yet been proven.
