Grand Duke Frederick I instituted the Landwehr award on 4 January 1877. Non-commissioned officers and reserve and Landwehr personnel who participated in at least one campaign or were called up for active service on an exceptional occasion for at least 3 months were awarded. The model or pedant for this was to be the service award of the Landwehr of the 2nd class of Prussia. In 1913, the service award in the form of a buckle was replaced by a medal. Holders of the old service award could receive a new medal at their own expense. The award sheet or publication did not take place. It was issued with title. The award was non-refundable. The tape on the sheet is most often watered, as in other service awards. Woven tape without watering.
