This military commemorative coin was presented along with the military commemorative coin for 1813 on 11 May 1814 by King Ernst August. All volunteer citizens who joined the Royal German Legion and thereby proved their loyalty to their master and their love for the fatherland were awarded. This applied to all fighters who fought against the enemy in Paris from 1803 until the conclusion of peace in 1814. In addition, foreigners were lent who joined the Royal German Legion as loyal comrades in arms.
The Royal German Legion (Kings-German Legion) was created by order of King George III. Founded by Great Britain and Elector Braunschweig-Luneburg on December 19, 1803. The commander-in-chief was Prince Adolf Frederick Duke of Cambridge (son of the king). Recruitment was entrusted to Major Colin Halkett and Baron Friedrich von der Decken. While under British command, it was the only German army to fight against Napoleon from 1803 to 1815. The legion consisted for the most part of recruited former soldiers of the Kursk-Hanover Army. The maximum number of troops is about 18,000, of which about 15,000 participated in the Battle of Waterloo. In 1816, the Royal German Legion was incorporated into the Royal Hanoverian Army.
