Silver and gold (silver gilded) medals were awarded. Silver medals were awarded to court and state officials, duty officers of the Dessau garrison and servants. The gold medal was intended for principalities and other dignitaries close to the duke.
The medal was established in 1867 by Duke Leopold IV. The medal project was created by Professor Otto Lessing from Berlin in honor of his 50. The stamp cutter was Schulz at the Royal Mint in Berlin. A gold medal is a rarity because it was awarded only sparingly. In the year of foundation, only 16 copies were handed over. Other sources confirm another 20 awards. Silver matt has about 680 awards.
