The Field Service Award was created by Grand Duke Leopold in 1839. They were received by all the soldiers who had previously taken part in the Baden military campaigns. Medals until 1866 were made of dark oxidized copper bronze. After that, they began to be made of copper. After the war, in 1866, Grand Duke Frederick I awarded this medal on September 7, 1866 with a ribbon loop with the number 1866.
Soldiers and officers who had previously held this field award subsequently also received such awards for campaigns in which they participated. The ordinance of April 1, 1871 regulated the donation of loops for 1870/71.
