This cross was presented on 25 June 1871 by Grand Duke Frederick. After the end of the war in 1870/71, labor and willingness to sacrifice, as well as the devotion of people in their own country, should also be appreciated. Men, women and virgins were awarded, distinguished by caring for the wounded and sick, caring for the troops and supporting families of reservists and militias called up for military service. The cross was not refundable. There are crosses made of gold bronze or bronze with gilding.
A gold bronze cross in the form of an Iron Cross. Front and back with a round central screen. The cruciform shoulders are bordered by polished edges, to which a fluted edge adjoins. The inner sides of the crosses are smooth. On the upper cruciform shoulder is an ear with a bandage ring.
