This memorial cross for the war years 1870/1871 was presented by King Johann on March 6, 1871. The cross was awarded to all men, women and virgins who were especially deserving in nursing or distinguished by other generous and selfless actions during the Franco-Prussian War and proved their patriotic meaning. The award included a copy of the founding deed, but not a certificate of award. The cross was not refundable.
In the tradition of this commemorative cross, King Frederick Augustus III later founded. In 1912, under the name "Commemorative Cross of Voluntary Nursing," the cross again for these merits. For services in peacetime, the front of the medallion was covered with red enamel. The crosses, which were then re-awarded during World War I, again have blue enameled rings on the front medallion. A gilt bronze cross with slightly figured cross sleeves. The cruciform shoulders are granular and bounded along the edge by polished edges. Front and rear with a round central shield. Between the cruciform sleeves at a short distance is a wreath of bay leaves on the left and oak foliage on the right. On the upper cruciform shoulder is a small decoration with an angular ear and a belt ring.
