The badge of honor for 40 years of work in the voluntary fire department was established on August 28, 1898 by decree of the Grand Duke Frederick I. This was already preceded by the establishment on December 21, 1877 of the badge of honor for 25 years of work in the voluntary fire department. This fund was then supplemented in 1898. A prerequisite was continuous, faithful service in a voluntary fire brigade, and at 40 years old and the previous award of a sling for 25 years. The passing military service was taken into account. This award was non-refundable and could be continued after leaving active duty. Like many awards, bronze was replaced by war metal (zinc) at the end of World War I. Source: J.
