German Awards - German States - Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach - Grand Duchy



In 1741, the Thuringian states of Saxe-Weimar and Saxe-Eisenach merged into the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Then, at the Vienna Congress of 1815, with the support of the Russian Tsar Alexander I, it acquired the status of a grand duchy. The rulers came from the Ernestine family. The capital was Weimar. Since 1903, the official name is the Grand Duchy of Saxony .
The Grand Dukes were:
  • Karl August (1815-1828)
  • Karl Friedrich (1828-1853)
  • Karl Alexander (1853-1901)
  • Wilhelm Ernst (1901-1918)

In 1918, Wilhelm Ernst abdicated and the Grand Duchy became the free state of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, until in 1920 it became part of the new state of Thuringia.
