The Silver Cross of Merit was presented on July 8, 1878 by the Grand Duke Karl Alexander on the occasion of his 25th anniversary of the reign. The Silver Cross of Merit was attached to the White Falcon's home Order of Vigilance and was the lowest level of the Order of the House. The cross was awarded to citizens of the Grand Duchy for civil merit. The silver cross "For Merit" when climbing the class of knights was to be removed from the occupied and returned to the order office. Crosses were made in Gotha. The stamp was made by the court medalist Ferdinand Helfricht, who was also a supplier until 1892. After his death, the company of Theodore Müller, a court jeweler from Weimar, took up production.
