The so-called Deutschritter-Kreuz was established in 1919 as a Freikorps Detachements von Randow award by its commander, Captain Alfred von Randow.
The volunteer corps was founded on January 5, 1919 in Schaulen, a place in the Baltic states. Formed to protect the railway track, the railway guard battalion was subordinate to the 52nd Army Corps of the 1st Infantry Regiment under the command of Colonel Sydov. The volunteer corps grew to nearly 5,000 by its end. Other commanders from May were Hauptmann Mayer and later Hauptmann Würth von Würtenau. Since June, the Randow Volunteer Corps was renamed the 1st Battalion of the 71st Reichswehr Infantry Regiment and in August subordinated to the 38th Brigade. After that, the Volunteer Corps was transferred to Celle under a new name.
