The Hitler Youth was founded at the 2nd Imperial Party Congress on 3 and 4 June 1926 in Weimar. Before the NSDAP came to power in 1933, the Hitler Youth was a relatively small youth organization. Membership was initially voluntary. In 1933, all other youth organizations were banned, and HJ became the only state youth. On December 1, 1936, the Hitler Youth Law was adopted, and on March 25, 1939, the "duty to serve youth" was introduced. As a result, membership of the ICJ became mandatory. Membership grew from about 100,000 in 1932 to 8.7 million in 1939. The Hitler Youth (HJ) membership badge shown here has been worn since about 1929 by all members who passed probation and "trial." It was worn on the left breast pocket. Due to the large number of brands, many manufacturers are known. They may be slightly different in design. Despite the large number of products produced, intact good products are relatively rare.
