The William Medal was established on March 2, 1837, simultaneously with the William Cross by King William IV. donated. The medal was awarded in silver and gold. Non-commissioned officers received the gold medal, starting with the rank of corporal, after 25 years of active service. Medals were worn along the edge of the embossed name of the bearer, as well as partially the rank and military unit. Silver medals did not receive a regional inscription and were awarded to non-commissioned officers and soldiers after 16 years of faithful service. The war years were doubly numbered. The first medals were created by the Braunschweig stampelschneider Fritz. Under King Ernst Augustus in 1841, new stamps were made for the front side. The 3rd version of the medals was created by medalist Friedrich Bremer in 1847. On the front side, the king is now depicted with blond hair and under the neck area has the manufacturer's designation - BREMER F. -.The size has changed from 25 mm to 26 mm. The award continued under King George V and continued after 1866 in exile. The backside remained unchanged. Source: J. Nimmergut, Deutsche Orden und Ehrenzeichen bis 1945, vol. 1, 1997.
