The Medal of Merit was established on October 1, 1904 by the Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich V of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. He was awarded gold, silver and bronze. Persons were awarded for good services in the service of the grand ducal house and country. In addition, the medal was awarded for loyalty in the profession and other outstanding and commendable actions. Medals were awarded only 10 years during the reign of Adolf Friedrich V. After taking office, his successor Adolf Friedrich VI. since 1915, new medals of merit began to be made with the image of the new Grand Duke.
