The princely Reusian Cross was established on 24 May 1869 by Prince Henry XIV. The younger line founded and expanded it in 1902 for the entire Principality of Reuss. The award, created back in 1869, in 1885 was awarded silver medals "For Merit" as the 5th. Royce's class was replenished with a junior line. In 1897, Prince Henry XIV established a gold (silver gilded) medal as the highest degree. In 1902, the front was changed and has since been considered the overall award of the Reuss junior and senior line. On 28 May 1909, Crown Prince Henry XXVII donated swords for services to the war. A gold crown (15 mm high) was also donated to the Gold Merit Medal as a special award. Source: J. Nimmergut, Deutsche Orden und Ehrenzeichen bis 1945, vol. II, 1997.
