The 1st minting of the royal Bavarian medal of military merit was still minted with a spindle press. She has a stamp signature - Losch - and a front rewrite that doesn't extend as far around the breast portrait. Due to the emerging weakness of the stamp, there are medals with a weak signature or without a signature. Minting options are also known here, which are thinner and weigh only about 14.5 g. The periods of minting, rolling and issuing may differ. This coinage was awarded exclusively for the feats of courage of 1805-1815 and was minted and issued from 1807 to 1827, as it is called. The Military Merit Medal was established by Elector Karl Theodor. The medal is awarded in 2nd grade, as a gold and as a silver medal for military merit. The first medals were awarded from 1794 to 1797 with the image of Karl Theodor. The second award period shows Max Joseph as Elector Max Joseph IV. granted from 1799 to 1806. Only 230 medals were awarded between 1793 and 1805. The first medals with Max Joseph I as king began to be awarded since 1807. Nevertheless, the charters were as specific as possible. The stamp was carved by Joseph Losch, who worked at the Munich Mint from 1803 to 1826. In addition to the modified inscription... " King of Bavaria" and a portrait of the front side, now on the reverse side there is a royal coat of arms on a shield. From 1807 to 1871, medals depicting small breasts began to come into circulation. The award for the Silver Medal of Military Merit with a reduced breast image from 1807 to 1901 is the 2007 medals. Between 1807 and 1918, there were 2 different types of medals awarded, with a small and large chest portrait of the king. In 1871, medals with an enlarged image of the chest were created by coin medalist Johann Ries. Both medals have coinage options, which are explained by changing coinage tools or updating worn stamps. By royal decree, the Military Merit Medal was renamed the Medal of Courage on March 2, 1918. Source: Walter Kinast, Karlsfeld, published in OMSA (Orders & Medals Society of America), 2023.
