Salvation medals were established by Grand Duke Frederick I on September 30, 1866. Initially, this award was established in 3 stages, as a large gold medal, a small gold medal and a silver medal. Gold medals were minted in very small quantities. There is no big gold medal. Small gold medal awards also only reach 1890 in several copies.
The front sides of silver medals were minted in the 1st minting with the stamps of the medal "For Merit." Under the neck they have the manufacturer's designation: - C. SCHNITZSPAHN F. -. The 2nd production series was minted from November 1882 by the mint Frank without a manufacturer designation. Of this coinage, only silver medals were awarded. These medals were awarded to those who courageously and selflessly saved lives and property.
