This medal was awarded as a commemorative badge to Red Cross nurses and paramedics who earned from caring for the wounded. Similarly, members of the volunteer Red Cross support columns were hired. This award was donated by Empress Auguste Victoria, who was the main protector of the Red Cross. Variants with and without an ear are known.
