The military knightly order of St. George was established by Elector Karl Albrecht of Bavaria on March 20, 1729. It consisted of 3 classes, differing in foreigners and Germans, the Grand Cross, Komtur and knights. The motto of the order was - JUSTUS - UT - PALMA - FLOREBIT - the righteous will bloom like a palm tree. This was preceded by the confirmation of Pope Benedict XIII. Claiming the imperial crown, he wanted to create an order that would give the house prestige. The Austrian Habsburg house with Charles VI. as the Roman emperor, the Golden Fleece had as a home order, the Prussian royal house - the Order of the Black Eagle. The Order of St. George was to become the most stringent chivalric order of the Christian world. A 300-year ancestral ordeal and the Catholic faith were required. All paternal and maternal ancestors had to be of noble descent. The conditions were stricter than those of the Order of Malta. The first award took place on George's Day on April 24, 1729 at the Frauenkirch in Munich. At the last order festival of the Elector and Grand Master Karl Albrecht in 1741, the order consisted of 71 people. The number of individual classes was limited to 6 large crosses, 12 compartments. The Knights had no voice in the chapter. The spiritual knightly class, approved in 1741, consisted of a bishop, elders, deans and order plans. By 1889, the order had 422 members. The decoration of the cavaliers of the Grand Cross consisted of an order cross and the corresponding chest star depicted here. Metal stars were made from about 1830. The design and size varies, for example, in the coverage of wishbones or balls on tops or enameled surfaces. The producer was Eduard Kvelhorst from Munich.
