German Awards - 1861 Ribbon Coronation Medal
In memory of his coronation, King William I instituted this commemorative medal on 22 March 1862. This medal was to be received by persons who were on the coronation train, persons who were present at the coronation, generals, officers and soldiers who were in service at the coronation celebration, as well as individual officials who were present at the coronation in Königsberg at official posts. The Russian delegation received a medal on a blue ribbon, the rest of the persons - on an orange-yellow ribbon. Medals were made with a grooved eye or a smooth eye.
Several examples were made of silver and cost about 3 times more. The stamp cutter is Friedrich Wilhelm Kullrich.
Round medal made of gilded bronze with a border. Above is a soldered grooved eye with a ribbon ring.
Front side:
In the - center of each other are portraits of William I and Augusta in the Coronation Cathedral.
- In the foreground is William I with a crown, fur and order chain. Behind Augustus with a crown and a chain.
- On the edge there is an inscription: on the left - WILHELM - KOENIG -, on the right - AUGUSTA - KOENIGIN - V.- PREUSSEN -
- Under smaller portraits - ZUR - VENUNG - AM - 18. - OCT. – 1861 –
Downside:
In - the center is a round shield with a wide ring inside and outside with a slightly raised border.
- At the bottom of this ring is the inscription - SUUM - CUIQUE - (Solution of the Black Eagle Order)
In - the surrounded field is a crowned coat of arms with a Prussian eagle.
- Below are crossed over the imperial apple scepter and sword.
- The tips of the sword and scepter, as well as the crown, protrude onto the outer ring.
- The coat of arms, crown, scepter and sword hide the cross depicted in the background.
- Between the middle shield and the border surrounding the chain of the Order of the Black Eagle.
Emblems of 8 - Prussian provinces laid on a chain at an equal distance.
- On the outer edge of the medal and on the central shield are decorations.
