This medal was awarded to participants in battles in the colonies (German reserves) or abroad for the protection of the Germans. The crews of the naval cruisers Bismarck and Olga, who fought in and under Cameroon, were also eligible for this award. Fighters in South West Africa from 1904 to 1908, as well as fighters in China from 1900 to 1901, were not eligible to receive this medal, as separate commemorative coins were donated for these fights. The seal was made by Professor Rudolf Marshall of Vienna. Therefore, this commemorative coin is significantly less common than the commemorative coin of China or Southwest Africa.
There are many battle belts for this commemorative coin, Togo with dates, Cameroon with dates, Samoa 1888, Venezuela 1902/03, Ponape 1910/11, to name a few. Source: J. Nimmergut, Deutsche Orden und Ehrenzeichen before 1945, vol. IV, 2001.
The round bronze medal (also gilded) on top has a broadening of the edge with a hole for placing a small ring, on it a ribbon ring.
