The Duke Ernst Medal with swords on the ribbon was established in 1915 by oral order of the Duke as a military award for courage. Characteristic of swords is that they are minted on one side and stretch to the ribbon through 2 jumpers on the back. Swords were also used in combination with oak leaves with 1914/15 dates for Duke Ernst II's retinue. Only 2 cases have been documented.
