This commemorative medal was established on August 2, 1895 by the Grand Duke Frederick I. He was the protector of the Union of Baden Military Unions. The occasion was the 25th anniversary of the victory in the war of 1870/71 against France. As part of Warriors Day, a flag medal fund was created in Karlsruhe, which was worn on a noose on the club flag. A prerequisite for the award was at least 25 years of association, which also had to have at least 10 years of membership in the Union of Baden Military Associations. In the event of the collapse of the club, the medal was subject to return. The December decrees stated that the medal was not worn constantly on the flag, but only on union and domestic holidays.
In October 1914, the Grand Duke Frederick II founded another gilded commemorative medal with a crown for those clubs that lasted more than 50 years. In 1915, 63 clubs gave their silver commemorative medals for processing. But due to the world war, the release did not take place anymore. The Grand Duke after the war received back from the Free State recycled medals as personal property. This prompted a publication for eligible clubs by the military union in 1919.
The design of the medal belongs to H. Goetz, who since 1882 was the director of the School of Applied Arts in Karlsruhe. Medals were minted by B. H. Mayer in Pforzheim. This company also took over the redesign into the Gold Medals of Remembrance with a crown. The crown was movingly associated with the medal. The silver medal was also made of silver. 923 silver medals were awarded .
