Memorial War Medal 1870/71
- Material: Bronze
- Size: 30mm
- Weight: About 15g
This commemorative medal was established on March 11, 1871 by Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Altenburg. The medal was created to directly encircle the duke in the 1870-71 war against France. The medal of memory was awarded personally by Ernst I. No bylaws were issued, and the award took place without a certificate or diploma. The coinage number was 50 pieces. The return request is unknown.
Duke Ernst I concluded a military convention with Prussia on March 30, 1862. On June 21, 1866, a military alliance with Prussia against Austria in the German War followed, and a little later, entry into the North German Union. The Altenburg contingent was no longer in use. At the beginning of the war against France on July 15, 1870, the duke first became the general staff of the Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II. separated from Mecklenburg-Schwerin. October 4, 1870 transferred to the state of IV. Army Corps under the command of General von Alvensleben. In 1907, he was deposed by William II. appointed colonel general with the rank of field marshal. He was the head of the Saxon jaeger battalions No. 6 and 12.
The Medal of Remembrance is a rarity. With a coinage of 50 pieces, fewer were probably preserved.
Round medal made of light bronze with raised edges. Above is a soldered ordinary eye with a ribbon ring.
