This award was established on June 6, 1914 by Prince Gunther for both principalities of Schwarzburg. New service awards were given for 1st class after 15 years of service with the copper cross, 2nd class after 12 years and 3rd class after 9 years of loyal service with the copper uniform. Non-commissioned officers and soldiers of the Black Forest principalities were awarded in the 7th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 96, as well as gendarmerie officers in the lands. Service awards valid until then since 1867 in the form of a buckle were awarded separately in both principalities with a different look. Old service awards had to be changed to a new form. Retired soldiers could acquire new uniforms at their own expense.
