Service award crosses for the line military of Frankfurt were established on December 15, 1840 by decision of the Senate. Officers received the cross for 25 years of faithful and groundless service in gilded silver. At the same time, service award crosses were established for non-commissioned officers, playmen and soldiers. They were awarded after 25, 15 and 10 years of service. To calculate the years of service, the following was valid: officers were credited with the term of service of a non-commissioned officer and soldier. The war years and the year of possible wounding were counted twice. Years of service in foreign service counted only for officers who subsequently served in Frankfurt for at least 10 years. An additional salary was associated with the award. Crosses were subject to return in case of death or promotion. Due to wear in 1847, the reverse stamps were redone. The result was slight deviations. The first crosses and stamps were made by the mint master Tomschütz from Frankfurt. The stamps were updated by the Nassau medalist Zollman from Wiesbaden.
