A commemorative military coin for fighters (combatants), along with a commemorative military coin for non-combatants, was presented on May 20, 1871 by the king and emperor William I. All soldiers, doctors, officials and sailors of the navy who participated in battles or sieges or crossed the border with France in wartime until March 2, 1871, as well as the crew of the royal ship "Augusta." The commemorative coin was made of captured guns of France. The stamp was minted by the court and coin medalist Wilhelm Kullrich. A commemorative military coin with a certificate of possession was awarded. Commemorative coins were not refundable.
Due to the large number of decorations and renewal of tools, embossing deviations are possible. The necessary overprints are most often made of gilded brass without an edge inscription and differ in design (font, crown and cross) from the originals. The number of awarded fighters is about 1.1 million.
