German Awards - German States - Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg

The duchy arose under Duke Ernst I the Pious (1601-1675). The latter under the Ernestine division received Saxony-Gotha, which was separated from Saxony-Weimar. After the Saxe-Altenburg dukes became extinct in 1672, the land was divided into Saxe-Weimar and Saxe-Gotha. Most of the land went to Saxe-Gotha and Duke Ernst I. Since that time, the duchy began to be called Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg.
The duchy lasted until 1825. Since the last two rulers did not have a male heir, the duchy was divided. Gotha went to Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and Altenburg to Saxony Hildburghausen.
The dukes were:
  • Ernst I in 1640-1675
  • Frederick I in 1675-1689
  • Frederick II. 1689-1732
  • Frederick III. 1732-1772
  • Ernst II. 1772-1804
  • August 1804-1822
  • Frederick IV. 1822-1825
