Active or vacation Air Force personnel could receive this badge after successfully training and obtaining an L glider driver's license and appropriate probation. Also, under equal conditions, officials and military personnel of the Marine Corps could be awarded. The author of the project is the graphic artist Wilhelm Ernst Pickhouse. The first signs were made by C.E. Juncker, Berlin.
Badges were made of non-ferrous metal with gilding and zinc with silver plating.
