The badge of honor of the 2nd form in the form of a silver-plated medal was established by Adolf Hitler on January 30, 1938. In the period from 1936 to 1938, the Reich Minister of Economics established the 1st form of a single badge of honor. This badge of honor of the Reichsgrubenwehr was a bare gray iron plate with a needle at the back. With the introduction of the new badge of honor, awarding the previous model was prohibited. The awards were given to members of mine squads who served faithfully for 15 years, miners who were forced out of service by accident, and members of mine squads and other miners who showed themselves to be courageous and determined in their conduct of missions and rescue operations.
The design of the medal was developed by Professor Hans Schweitzer. Medals were silver plated in bronze and silver plated in military metal.
