The Cross of Merit was established as a subdivision of the Order from the Tseringen Lion on April 29, 1889 by the Grand Duke Frederick I. This award was presented for services to civilians on the peace ribbon (yellow with green side stripes) or in the period 1915-1918 to military personnel. In accordance with the notice from the 16.05.1915, the cross was intended for lieutenant sergeant major and was awarded on the ribbon the Karl Friedrich medal for military merit (tin red with yellow side stripes and white edges). The cross was subject to return after death.
There are crosses in bronze gilded or silver gilded performance. A total of 3,237 merit crosses were awarded. They account for 2,681 works.
The cross is gilt bronze with wide polished edges. The inner sides of the cross sleeves are finely cut. Front and back with a round central shield, which is limited to 2mm wide relief cord. On the upper cruciform shoulder, an ear with an elongated belt ring is transversely standing with embossing.
