Merit medals in gold, silver and bronze, donated by Grand Duke Karl Alexander as early as 1857, were considered with principles to be awarded only in 1889. The award was made for civil merit of all kinds.
According to the new decree of August 5, 1892, merit medals were now supplied with the older image of Grand Duke Karl Alexander. The seal on the new obverse was again made by Professor Helfricht, court engraver and medalist of the Grand Duchy at the mint in Gotha since 1832. Stamps with the old image were made back in 1889, 3 years before the start of the award and his death. The template was a bust of Professor Hildebrand in Munich. Medals continued to be awarded in 3 stages: gold, silver and bronze for merits acquired due to efficiency in the affairs of the Grand Duchy, and now also the German Empire.
